April is designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
"We lose more than 3,000 lives annually on our roads because of distracted driving. This equates to about nine deaths each day, and we must put an end to this," stated Jana Tidwell from AAA Mid-Atlantic.
Smartphones contribute to 12% of distracted driving cases; however, other diversions encompass navigating with a GPS, adjusting the radio, or having snacks.
Pennsylvania is set to implement a new hands-free regulation starting from June 5th.
"Which means you can't hold the phone, program the phone, make a call, or do anything else with the device in your hand in Pennsylvania. This will be considered a primary offense," explained Jana.
Methods for staying involved when traveling on roads encompass:
- Storing your phone in a bag or within the center console
- Mapping out your path ahead of time
- Asking passengers for help
- Not being a distraction when riding as a passenger
