Drivers have encountered significant traffic jams at the Dartford Crossing following roadwork closures that blocked a tunnel, causing an overflow of vehicles.

On Sunday, travel was interrupted at Dartford following significant holdups at the crossing that links the A282 with the area. M25 between Essex and Kent.

Around noon, motorists encountered approximately 60 minutes of delay and about five miles of traffic buildup approaching the crossing, extending beyond Swanley and reaching as far as the M20 junction.

Although the tunnel was reopened around 2 pm, some lingering delays remain in the vicinity.

This is the United Kingdom's most heavily used crossing, with approximately 150,000 vehicles per day on average. It comprises two northern-bound tunnels along with the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge designated for southern-bound traffic.

The journey across today has not been easy following delays in the planned overnight shutdowns of the west bore of the A282 Dartford Tunnel.

National Highways cautioned: 'Dedicated teams are handling the required fixes to the roadway. The blockade is anticipated to continue throughout the afternoon.'

The scheduled work in the westbore tunnel was set to conclude by 5 am this morning.

Nevertheless, the work had to proceed "because of an infrastructure issue that was found during regular maintenance," according to National Highways.

The second, eastbound tunnel continues to stay open.

Several bus routes have experienced disruptions due to the tunnel closure, notably Ensign Buses, which has discontinued service from both Lakeside and Bluewater stations.

We reached out to National Highways for their input.

The maintenance costs for the tunnels at the Dartford Crossing are higher than those for the bridge. Zerica Toease understands.

This is due to the 'increased energy demands and stricter safety protocols' like ventilation, fire safety, and drainage pumps required for the tunnels, according to National Highways.

The Dartford Crossing has been making headlines lately following the contentious issue. Lower Thames Crossing A few miles farther east alongside the river received approval.

The newly proposed 14-mile Lower Thames Crossing tunnel and roadway project has encountered some resistance; however, this large-scale initiative aims to alleviate traffic bottlenecks around Dartford.
