NEW CASTLE, Del. (KYW Newsradio) A woman is in critical condition following a school bus accident in New Castle early Wednesday morning.

Emergency personnel reached the junction of Route 896 and Red Lion Road approximately at 8 a.m., where they discovered a lady pinned within a sedan beneath a school bus filled with students en route to class.

Following the removal of the bus from the woman’s severely damaged car, rescue teams worked for two hours attempting to free her.

"We had to remove the undercarriage of the vehicle, shift the dashboard aside, and then tackle the guardrail, which presented another difficult scenario," stated Captain BrandonSpeakman from the Christiana Fire Company.

You're attempting to figure out how to disassemble a vehicle that isn't meant to be taken apart while dealing with someone who is already severely hurt.

The car was crumpled and warped, and the bus suffered significant frontal impact damage.

The lady was transported to a close-by medical facility for care. Authorities state that children who were on the bus have been reunited with their relatives. No one sustained injuries from the accident.

As stated by the Appoquinimink School District, "Direct communication has been made with families of the students who were on the bus and they will keep receiving specific updates as further details become available."

Much of section 896 was shut down for several hours.
