The Tyler City Council has agreed to continue their involvement with the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority Grant, a longstanding initiative designed to decrease car thefts in the area.

For 31 years, the Tyler Police Department has participated in this grant initiative, collaborating with a team of seven to eight detectives statewide in Texas to track down and retrieve stolen cars—often ones that have been moved between states.

Police Chief Jimmy Toler highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing cross-boundary motor vehicle theft cases.

That collaboration enables everyone involved to benefit from an amplified capability when probing such criminal activities," Toler explained. "Occasionally, it isn’t merely a single stolen car; sometimes multiple vehicles might be lifted from a dealership. These could wind up at borders or scattered across different states. This is where the expertise of these specialized detectives comes into play.

The funding from the grant supports the researchers' efforts and assists the city in tackling intricate theft cases. Tyler consistently allocates annual budgets to sustain the initiative, thereby demonstrating their dedication to enhancing community security.
